A Taste of Honey?

It’s ‘Cinco de Mayo’ today, so let’s celebrate the occasion with a music blog! Although Cinco is obviously associated with Mexico, it’s mostly celebrated in the United States where it’s been growing in popularity since the 80’s. Today it’s kind of an unconventional hybrid holiday in celebration of Mexican-American culture. On that note I’ve dug up a classic tune from a huge star in the 1960’s. Herb Alpert was a musician from Los Angeles who traveled to Tijuana and was influenced by the sounds of Mariachi. Soon he brought this Mexican inspired music into the mainstream with his band; “The Tijuana Brass.” They dominated that decade and won six grammies in the process. The following video was one of their biggest hits; “A Taste of Honey.” Do you recognize it?

This song was also featured on Herb’s album; Whipped Cream & Other Delights.” It was the #1 selling album in 1966, even besting ‘The Beatles!’ The band made a ton of great music, but this particular iconic album cover could also be considered by many to be the “sexiest of the 60’s.”
