Leaders of the Free World?

I discovered an amazing song the other day that must be written about just so I can save it to the archives on this site. Then everyone can have access and enjoy it whenever and however they find it eventually. Today’s entry is from an English rock band called “Elbow,” and it was released in 2005. The title track is called “Leaders of the Free World,” and the lyrics are a not-so-subtle reference to their displeasure of 43rd President George W. Bush.

While I can agree that the Bush & Cheney administration was a dark and terrifying era, it’s nowhere near the dystopian absurdity of 2021. Imagine if George Bush was pressuring people into taking experimental vaccines! Calling for mask mandates, and sending government goons to your neighborhood so they can go door-to-door to hassle you and your family? I bring this up in part because of the following lyrics from this nearly sixteen year old tune. Do these words still apply today?

“Persicope up, I’ve been looking for a ladder, I need to see the Commander in Chief. And remind him what was passed onto me…”

“But the leaders of the free world are just little boys throwing stones. And it’s easy to ignore ‘til they’re knocking on the door of your homes!”
