Today is April 6th, officially making it the 27th anniversary of a very special sports controversy. It was a football story involving a couple of guys named ‘Jim’ in Los Angeles. One was a professional athlete, the former Quarterback for the local ‘Rams’ team. The other was a “professional” sports journalist. An arrogant ‘Monday Morning Quarterback’ that taunted the actual man in the arena; referring to ‘athlete Jim’ as ‘Chris’ instead. As in the ‘feminine’ because he shared a similar last name of a famous female Tennis Star. They were cheap shots to his toughness after taking real shots in real life. He took a beating at one game in particular, forever known now as the ‘Phantom Sack.’ You can watch it right here:
Jim Everett has endured a lot of abuse, both on and off the field throughout his career. But fortunately for everybody, the two Jims finally sat together for an interview to clear the air.
It was a glorious sight to behold. You almost have to respect Jim Rome for staying true to his form though. And it also made it all the more satisfying to watch that jerk get what he deserved too. He was warned to be fair however, and it could have been a thousand times worse. They haven’t spoken to each other since that day, but Jim Everett hasn’t forgotten about it, and neither will we.
