The Night the Map Broke: Democrats Take Both Chambers, and GOP Blame Game Begins!

Last week's RCP map said 47-44 with nine toss-ups. Wednesday night the AP had it at 54-44. Vance blames the Iran war, MTG calls it a referendum on Trump, and the podcasters turn on each other. Gonzo Lounge, Nov 4, 2026.

Last Thursday I sat right here and read you the RealClearPolitics map: Democrats at 47 locked or leaning, Republicans at 44, nine toss-ups, and Democrats needing four of the nine because Vice President Vance breaks the ties. Some of you called me a doomer. Wednesday night the AP scoreboard read Democrats 54, Republicans 44, with Alaska and Mississippi still uncalled. Democrats took the House too, and a majority of governorships for the first time in two decades. So we did an impromptu late-night Wednesday show to sort out what happened, and who’s blaming whom.

As always: allegations aren’t convictions, questions aren’t conclusions, and criticism of politicians, governments, lobbies and ideologies is not a verdict on any ethnicity or religion. Theories stay labeled as theories.

Topics on Tonight’s Gonzo Lounge

  • The scoreboard. Per the AP as of Wednesday night: Senate D 54, R 44, with Alaska and Mississippi (both Republican-held) not yet called. Democrats flipped seven Senate seats: Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. In the House, the AP had Democrats at 237 called seats to 139, with about 59 uncalled; 218 is the majority. Governors: D 28, R 20, two uncalled. (AP · AP: uncalled races · AP: Alaska)
  • “The Iran war cost us the midterms.” We read The Federalist’s write-up of Vice President Vance’s argument that 2024 Trump voters crossed over, and its column “The Blue Tsunami Isn’t What Neocons Want It To Be.” Exit polls showed about six in ten voters said the Iran decision was wrong, and about three in four said the war was at least a major factor. Cost of living ranked even higher. AAA had regular gas at $4.27 on Oct. 22. (Federalist: Vance · Federalist: blue tsunami)
  • The blame game. Thomas Massie: the result is “about holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises.” Marjorie Taylor Greene: “a total referendum on Trump.” Jeffrey Tucker on what Trump’s supporters gave up. Megyn Kelly blaming Mark Levin, Nancy Mace vs. Levin, and flashbacks of Levin and Ben Shapiro cheering the war’s launch. (Massie · MTG · Tucker · Kelly clip · Levin · Daily Mail)
  • Michigan and Texas. Abdul El-Sayed beat Mike Rogers in Michigan. We played Rogers’ real 60 Minutes line, “the next generation of kids thinks it’s really cool to be against the Jews,” and Massie’s reply that opposing wars isn’t antisemitism. In Texas, James Talarico beat Ken Paxton for Senate and Gina Hinojosa unseated Gov. Greg Abbott. (Massie on Rogers)
  • Podcasters on trial. Owen Shroyer vs. Brendan Dilley, Viva Frei’s “ridiculous conclusion” response to Joel Pollak, Chase Geiser, and Laura Loomer’s fear posts. (Shroyer · Viva Frei · Geiser · Loomer)
  • Massie’s primary and the pro-Israel PACs. Massie lost his May primary 54.9–45.1 after pro-Israel groups spent about $8 million against him, including about $4.1 million from the AIPAC-funded United Democracy Project and $3.9 million from the RJC Victory Fund (Reuters, Louisville Public Media, WLKY). We also aired a 1980s CBS 60 Minutes segment on AIPAC’s clout.
  • 2028 and a Democratic Congress. Ron DeSantis won’t rule out a run. Vance, Rubio, AOC, Newsom, Harris and Ro Khanna, whose agenda includes Medicare for All and a $25 wage. I argued with it on cost. Speaker Johnson says he won’t seek the minority leader job. (Khanna)
  • The close. A 33-year-old’s viral rant: “Government is supposed to work for us.” He speaks for a lot of us.

Fact Check Corner: Receipts Go Both Ways

My RCP read from last week held up. Here’s where I was sloppy on this show.

  • The House count. I said “AP scoreboard,” then said Democrats were at 247 (Real Clear Politics). That was Decision Desk HQ’s count. The AP had 237 called Wednesday night (AP).
  • “Not one seat flipped.” Republicans did flip one: Texas’ 32nd District (CBS News).
  • “Foreign interests” and Massie. The roughly $8 million spent against Massie came from U.S. PACs funded by U.S. donors: the AIPAC-funded United Democracy Project and the RJC Victory Fund. You can argue with how it was spent, but it isn’t technically direct foreign money.
  • The AIPAC money loop. I agreed with a clip saying U.S. aid flows to Israel and back through AIPAC to politicians, and I said “bribe” and “blackmail.” There’s no record of that (Epstein Files still sealed) . U.S. aid runs about $3.8 billion a year under the 2016 agreement, plus supplementals. AIPAC is funded by American donors, and its spending is disclosed. I also said Netanyahu funded Breitbart early on, and I have no receipt for that. Do have a fun picture though.
  • Laura Loomer. I said she “needs to be deported.” She’s a U.S.-born citizen. Argue with her posts, not her citizenship.
  • Over the line. A few of my lines about Israel’s supporters were about identity, not policy, including “Zionist parasites” and remarks about Ben Shapiro’s religious observance. Criticizing a government, a lobby or a war is fair game. Smearing people for who they are isn’t, and that’s the same standard I hold Loomer to.
